Check for a hidden leak with your water meter
Turn everything off. Every tap, the washing machine, the dishwasher and any outside tap. Don't flush a toilet during the test.
Find your meter. It's usually in a small chamber near your boundary, in a box on an outside wall, or occasionally under the kitchen sink.
Take a reading. Write it down or take a photo.
Wait at least 30 minutes without using any water, then read it again.
Compare. If the numbers have moved, water is escaping somewhere between the meter and your taps.
Your water in Baldock is supplied by Affinity Water. If you're on a meter and a leak on your side has pushed your bill up, Affinity Water may give a one off leak allowance once the leak is repaired promptly, so keep a note of when you found it and when it was fixed. Their leakage allowance rules are on affinitywater.co.uk.
Signs of a leak you can't see
- A damp patch on a wall or ceiling that keeps coming back
- Floorboards that feel soft, or flooring that starts to lift
- The sound of running water when nothing is switched on
- Water pressure that has dropped for no clear reason
- A water bill that's higher than usual
- Mould or a musty smell in one spot
- A patch of lawn or drive that stays wet in dry weather, which can mean a leak on the outside supply pipe
How we find the leak and fix it
We start with what you've noticed and a careful visual check, then pressure test the pipework to confirm there's a leak and narrow down where it is. Specialist equipment helps us trace leaks on supply pipes and waste runs, including under floors, behind walls and underground. Once we've found it, we repair it properly rather than patching it, and we keep a record of what we found and what we did. Every repair is guaranteed for 12 months.
Because the same team does the finding and the fixing, you don't need to book a second firm. If a leak has damaged a bathroom, we can put that right too. Our sage green bathroom in Baldock is an example of the bathroom side of our work.
Leaks on the supply pipe and under floors
If the leak is on the supply pipe between your boundary and the house, a repair is sometimes enough. An old or damaged pipe is often better replaced, so it doesn't fail again further along. We'll explain which makes sense before any work begins. A stiff or failing stopcock is worth replacing at the same time, so you can always shut the water off quickly.
“I reached out to JLP Plumbing to stop a leak - Jack was super responsive planning to view the leak. He effortlessly fixed the leak and replaced the tap leaving little to no mess. I could not recommend him enough! 5/5*”
