Rated 5.0 on Google · Fully insured

When a pipe bursts or water starts dripping through a ceiling, it helps to have plumbers who are already in town. Our team is based in Letchworth Garden City, and this year we have been out to Letchworth homes for leaks and burst pipes, blocked toilets and drains, taps, toilets and showers that failed, and hot water cylinders that stopped working. Before we arrive: four things to do

01

Shut the water off. The inside stopcock is usually under the kitchen sink, though some houses have it under the stairs or near the front door. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If it's seized, there is normally an outside stop tap under a small cover in the pavement or by your boundary. That one belongs to Affinity Water, the local supplier.

02

Keep water and electrics apart. If water is reaching a light, a socket or the fuse box, switch the power off at the consumer unit and stay clear of anything wet.

03

Drain what's left. Once the supply is off, open the cold taps to empty the pipes, so less water escapes from the damaged spot, and switch off the immersion heater.

04

Call 01462 510001. Tell us what's happening, or WhatsApp a photo to 07719 056800 so we can see it before we set off.

Urgent plumbing we deal with in Letchworth Garden City

Burst and frozen pipes

Water expands as it freezes, so a cold snap can split a pipe, and the leak often only shows once it thaws. We cut out the split section, fit new pipe and test it under pressure before anything is covered over.

Leaks you can't find

A damp patch on a ceiling or a meter that keeps turning with every tap shut usually means a hidden leak. We trace it with pressure tests and specialist equipment, so only the area around the leak is opened up.

Blocked or overflowing toilets and drains

Stop flushing straight away. Most toilets have a small isolating valve on the pipe into the cistern: a quarter turn with a flat screwdriver stops it refilling. Drains that back up into gullies or the garden need unblocking quickly, often with high pressure jetting. More on drain unblocking.

Hot water cylinder faults

A cylinder that has stopped heating, is leaking from its base or is discharging water from a pipe outside needs looking at quickly. We repair and replace vented and unvented cylinders and immersion heaters.

Taps, toilets and showers that won't stop running

A tap that won't turn off, or a cistern that overflows into the pan nonstop, can run all night. We replace the worn cartridge, washer or valve so it shuts off properly again.

Business premises

A leak in a shop, a blocked washroom in an office or a burst pipe at a school in Letchworth Garden City is handled the same way: shut the water off, then call us. We also fit and maintain commercial washrooms and drainage, so the follow up work can be planned with the same team.

When to call us

Our lines are open 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday. Call 01462 510001 and we'll give you the earliest time we can be with you. Outside those hours, turn the water off at the stopcock, then send us an enquiry or a WhatsApp and we'll reply as soon as we open. Every repair we make is guaranteed for 12 months.

Why Letchworth homes get the emergencies they do

Letchworth is the world's first garden city, so the housing ranges from the original cottages of the early 1900s to post war estates such as the Grange and Jackmans, and the Lordship and Manor Park homes built from the 1970s. In homes with a cold water tank in the loft, the pipes up there run through the coldest part of the house, which is where most frozen pipes start. Lagging them, and leaving the heating on low when you go away in winter, prevents most of them.

The town's water is hard. Scale builds up on immersion heater elements, inside valves and on tap washers, which is why so many dripping taps and tired cylinders here trace back to limescale.

We cover every part of the town, including Norton, Wilbury, Westbury, Pixmore, the Grange, Jackmans, Lordship and Manor Park, plus Willian and Radwell.

Emergency questions from Letchworth customers

What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Water coming through a ceiling or light fitting, a burst or split pipe, a toilet or drain overflowing, no water at all, or a cylinder leaking or discharging. Ring us for any of those. A slow drip, a running cistern or a stiff tap can usually wait for a booked visit.
Who should I call about a water leak in the ceiling?
A plumber first. Water coming through a ceiling usually means a leaking pipe, a failed seal around a bath or shower, or a problem with a tank or cylinder above. Turn off your stopcock, switch off the power if water is near a light fitting, then call us on 01462 510001. Once the leak is fixed, give the ceiling time to dry out before it's repaired or repainted.
Where is my stopcock, and what if it won't turn?
Look under the kitchen sink first, then under the stairs or near the front door. Turn it clockwise to close it. If it is seized, use the outside stop tap under the small cover near your boundary, and don't force the inside one, because a stopcock that snaps makes things worse. We can replace a stiff stopcock once the emergency is over. Stopcock Replacement
Why do pipes burst in a cold snap?
When water freezes it expands, and the pressure has nowhere to go, so the pipe splits. The ice often plugs the split until it thaws, which is why bursts tend to show up as the weather warms. Lagging pipes in the loft and in unheated spaces is the best protection.
My toilet is overflowing. What should I do?
Stop flushing. Lift the cistern lid and push the float up to stop the water, or turn the isolating valve on the supply pipe a quarter turn with a flat screwdriver. Then call us. If it's the pan filling up rather than the cistern, the blockage may be further down the drain.
Do you come out at weekends?
Yes. We're open 7am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday, as well as 7am to 9pm on weekdays.
