Leak Detection in Letchworth Garden City

Rated 5.0 on Google · Fully insured

Letchworth Garden City is our home town, and leaks and burst pipes are part of our work here all year round. Many leaks start somewhere you can't see, often on the supply pipe that brings water into the house. The quickest way to prove whether there's a leak, and whether it's on your side, is a pressure test, and that's where we start.

What a pressure test tells you

We isolate a section of pipework, bring it up to pressure and watch a gauge. If the pressure holds, that section is sound. If it drops, there's a leak in it. Testing one section at a time narrows the search, so we can tell whether the problem is on the supply pipe outside, on the pipework inside, or on a particular branch, before anything is dug up or opened. It also shows whether the leak is on your side of the boundary or the water company's.

Older homes and old supply pipes

Letchworth's oldest homes date from the early 1900s, and many of the town's houses were built before 1970. Affinity Water's guidance is that homes built before then may still have lead pipework, and the pipe from your boundary to the house is the homeowner's to look after. Old lead or iron pipes can corrode and fail at the joints. If a leak turns up on one, replacing the run is often better value than repeated repairs, and it brings the pipe up to today's standards. As a WRAS approved firm, our work on supply pipes follows the Water Fittings Regulations.

Water Main Replacement

Leaks inside the house

Inside, leaks hide under kitchens and bathrooms, behind boxing in, and under floors where pipes run between rooms. A small weep from a joint can soak a floor for weeks before it shows. Once we've found it, we repair the pipe and tell you how much needs making good. If a pipe has split and water is escaping fast, that's an emergency.

Leak detection questions from Letchworth

What is a pressure test and do I need one?
It's a way of proving whether a section of pipework is leaking: we seal it off, pressurise it and watch whether the gauge drops. If your meter keeps moving with everything turned off, or you've a damp patch with no obvious cause, a pressure test is usually the quickest way to find out where to look.
Should I replace an old lead supply pipe?
In the long run, yes. Affinity Water advises replacing lead pipework, and the section from your boundary to the house is the homeowner's responsibility. If yours is leaking, that's the natural time to do it. Replacement must be done to the Water Fittings Regulations, which is the standard our WRAS approved work follows.
What should I do while I wait for you?
If water is escaping, turn off your stopcock to stop the flow, and keep water away from sockets and lights. If it's a slow leak, put a bowl or towel under it and note where the damp is and when it appears, because that helps us trace it faster. A stiff or broken stopcock is worth replacing.
