Leak Detection in Hitchin

Rated 5.0 on Google · Fully insured

A leak detection specialist will find your leak, and then you need someone else to fix it. In Hitchin, our team does both: we trace the leak, repair the pipe and, if a shower or a bathroom is behind it, put that right as well. We're based a short drive away in Letchworth Garden City, and our plumbers work in Hitchin homes throughout the year.

Why one team for finding and fixing matters

When the firm that finds the leak can't repair it, you're left waiting for a second visit, and sometimes a third for the making good. We find the leak, repair the pipework, and make good what we had to open up. If the leak turns out to be a failed shower or a bathroom that needs redoing, our bathroom team can take that on too. In September 2026 a Hitchin family reviewed the full bathroom renovation we'd finished for them.

Bathroom Fitters in Hitchin

Leaks behind showers and under bathrooms

A stain spreading across the kitchen ceiling under a bathroom is one of the most common leaks we see. The cause is usually one of three things: a perished seal around the tray or bath, a cracked tray, or a weeping joint on the waste or supply pipe. Tiles and grout on their own aren't waterproof, which is why a properly built shower has a waterproof layer called tanking behind them. Where that's missing or has failed, water gets into the wall and floor every time the shower runs.

Leaks in older Hitchin homes

Many of Hitchin's Victorian terraces and Georgian houses near the centre have pipework running under suspended timber floors and behind old plaster. A slow leak there can go unnoticed for months, until floorboards soften or a wall stays damp. Tracing it first means we only lift the boards or open the wall where the leak actually is.

What happens when we come out

01

We ask what you've noticed: where the damp is, when it appears, and whether it gets worse when a particular tap or shower is used.

02

We check the obvious first: visible pipework, seals, the water meter and the stopcock.

03

We pressure test and trace: pressure testing confirms a leak and narrows it down, and specialist equipment helps us trace it behind walls, under floors or underground.

04

We explain and agree: you'll know what we found and what the repair involves before any work begins.

05

We repair it: properly, not with a temporary patch, and the repair is guaranteed for 12 months.

Leak questions from Hitchin

How do you find a water leak that isn't visible?
We narrow it down step by step. First the signs, like where the damp is and when it appears, then a pressure test to confirm there's a leak and show which part of the pipework it's on. Specialist equipment then helps us trace the exact spot, so only that area needs opening up.
My shower is leaking through the ceiling. Is it the tray, the seal or a pipe?
It could be any of the three. If the stain appears only when the shower runs, it's often the seal or the tray. If it's there all the time, a supply pipe is more likely. We check each in turn, and if the shower needs rebuilding with proper tanking behind the tiles, we can do that too.
Do I need a leak detection specialist or a plumber in Hitchin?
For most homes, a plumber who does leak detection is the simpler choice, because the person who finds the leak can also repair it. That's how we work, so you don't have to wait for a second firm.
What affects the cost of leak detection?
Mainly how easy the pipework is to reach, where the leak turns out to be, and how much making good is needed afterwards. A call out fee applies to repair visits, and we confirm it before we attend. The repair itself is agreed with you before any work begins.
